In this tutorial we will describe how to model and render a modern living room in Maya. The tutorial is in two parts and covers the render techniques in mental ray, architectural material, shaders, realistic looking fur and interior lighting to create soft shadows.

This is a part 1, in which we will create our model and setup a scene for final rendering.

Final Result

Here is what the post-processed scene looks like if you follow both parts of this tutorial.

Step 1

First we will start with sofa. Create a poly cube in the scene and set the size according the image below.

fig 1

Step 2

Next step will be creating a curve shape with curves shape tool.  Go to Create and select CV curve tool, and create a curve like fig 02. adjust the vertex in the shape you wanted to make.  To select vortex, right click anywhere in the scene and select control vortex.

fig 2

Step 3

Right on the cube box and select face. Press SHIFT and select CURVE. Go to edit mesh and select extrude. In the attribute editor of the cube (on the right side of the screen) scroll down and increase the divisions to 10-12. in this tutorial I am using 11.

fig 3

Step 4

Delete the top faces of the couch. I wanted to make all the corners of the couch in round shape. after deleteing the top face select edges. Go to edit mesh and select bridge.

fig 4

Step 5

Delete the top faces of the couch. I wanted to make all the corners of the couch in round shape. after deleting the top face select edges. Go to edit mesh and select bridge.

fig 5

Step 6

To fill the open gap we will use fill hole tool. First go to Select > Select Border Edge tool. Double click on the open edge border (fig 07). Go to  Mesh>select option Fill Hole(fig 08).

fig 6

fig 7

fig 8

Step 7

I wanted to create a seam on the edges of the couch. this is the right stage to create a seam as in this stage there are few vertexes and faces. Select all the corner edges of the couch. Go to Edit Mesh> Select Bevel. Adjust the offset of the bevel settings.

fig 9

fig 10

Step 8

Now to make the soft cushions. select the center faces of the couch. Go to Edit Mesh> Select Extrude. adjust the parameters of the extrude (fig 12). Select the other faces of the couch as shown in fig 13 and extrude them.

fig 11

fig 12

fig 13

Step 9

Now our half portion of the couchh is completed. we will copy this half portion of the couch to its X Axis. But before doing that we have to remove some of the faces from the couch. Why we have do this? remember we have extruded the upper faces of the couch. Before making a mirror to the X Axis we need to remove those faces so that after making a mirror our vertexes get collapsed automatically.

fig 14

fig 14

Step 10

Now select the couch Go to Mesh> select the small box of Mirror Geomatry. Mirror Geomatry parameter will open(fig16) . Select X Axis, merge with the original and Merge vertices. If you had followed all the steps carefully you will end up with the fig17.

To see your couch in smooth Go to Modify> Convert> select polygons to subdiv.

fig 15

fig 16

fig 17

Step 11

To keep Our cushions in proper shape we need to add edges near the corners. Go to Edit Mesh> Select Insert Edge Loop Tool. Select on the edges and insert the edges.

fig 18

Step 12

Our couch base is completed now I will create a back for the couch.  create another poly cube in the scene and add subdivison width.  Select vertices and shape them according to our couch seat. this time again we are making a half portion and later on we will mirror it. Fig 20 is our final stage of couch.

fig 19

fig 20

In this step we will very quickly create the legs for our couch. To make the legs for our couch  I used  PolyCylinder. Adjusted some vertices and squezzed down the bottom vertices.  Select two edges and delete them to make the shape of the leg.

Step 13

In this step we will very quickly create the legs for our couch. To make the legs for our couch i used PolyCylinder. Adjusted some vertices and squeezzed down the bottom vertices. Select two edges and delete them to make the sahpe of the leg.

Step 14

Similar way I created the other couch. first create a poly cube extrude it along spline and put more details in by adding edges and vertices.  all the above steps lead you to the image below. Now your final couch look like this.

fig 23

Step 15

Now we will create a coffee table in front of the couch. Create a poly cube and set the widht and height of the cube (fig24). In the top viewport, add more vertices to give it a proper shape(fig25).  By adding more vertices, start making the shape like in fig 26. To make it more realistic add edge to its corners and scale it outside. to make it more interesting I copied the polycibe one more time and adjusted its vertices fig28. Later I added the legs for table. using polydylinder. Fig 29 is the final image of coffee table.

Step 16

After putting some more details in the scenes, like adding details to the sofa, table, carpet. its upto you now that what more you want to add in this scene. There is no limit in imagination and visualisation. As I told you earlier my final aim for this tutorials is to   introduce you to some of the techniques used in modeling, texturing and lighting. Fig 30 is our final image of the scene we are following in this tutorial.

fig 30

Stay tuned

In the second part of this tutorial, we will start doing texturing and lighting our interior scene.

good – but you don’t go into enough detail on how to create the back of the chair – or show enough reference pictures so at this point so,it becomes very difficult to achieve something anywhere near as good as yours – thanks a lot though it is a very good tut overall
